How to Extract Pages from a PDF
Extracting specific pages from a PDF document is one of the most common document management tasks. Whether you need to pull a single chapter from a textbook, isolate specific invoices from a batch, or separate a signed page from a contract, this tool makes it simple. Everything processes locally in your browser, so your documents remain completely private.
- Upload your PDF by dragging it into the drop zone or clicking to browse. Files up to 100 MB are supported. The tool validates the file type and size before loading.
- Select pages by clicking thumbnails directly, or type a page range like "1-5, 8, 10-12" in the range input field. Use the All, Odd, Even, or None buttons for quick selection.
- Click Extract Selected Pages (or press Enter) to create a new PDF containing only your chosen pages. A progress bar shows extraction status with page count.
- Preview the result in the built-in viewer. The stats grid shows page count, original size, output size, and processing time.
- Rename and download using the editable filename field. Press Ctrl+D to download instantly.

Why Extract PDF Pages
Large PDF documents often contain more information than you need to share or store. Extracting specific pages reduces file size, improves organization, and lets you share only relevant content without exposing the entire document. This is particularly important for confidential materials where you want to distribute only certain sections.
Unlike splitting a PDF (which divides the entire document into parts), page extraction lets you cherry-pick non-consecutive pages. You might need pages 1, 5, and 12-15 from a 50-page report. This selective approach gives you precise control over exactly which content ends up in your output file.
Use Cases
- Academic Research: Pull specific chapters or pages from textbooks and research papers for study notes or citations without carrying the entire document.
- Legal Documents: Extract signature pages, specific clauses, or exhibits from lengthy contracts to share with relevant parties.
- Financial Reports: Isolate quarterly summaries or specific account statements from comprehensive annual reports for board presentations.
- Job Applications: Extract relevant pages from a portfolio or certification bundle to customize submissions for different positions.
- Print Optimization: Select only the pages you actually need to print, saving paper and ink on large documents.
Tips and Tricks
- Use range syntax for large documents. Instead of clicking 50 thumbnails, type "1-50" in the range field and click Apply. You can combine ranges with individual pages: "1-10, 15, 20-25".
- Extract odd pages for double-sided scanning. If you scanned a double-sided document in two passes (all fronts then all backs), use the Odd/Even buttons to separate them.
- Check the output size. The stats grid shows how much smaller your extracted file is compared to the original. Fewer pages means smaller files, which is useful for email attachments.
- Rename before downloading. The editable filename field lets you give the extracted file a meaningful name instead of the default "_extracted" suffix.
- Combine with other tools. After extracting pages, use Merge PDF to combine extractions from multiple documents into one file.
How PDF Page Extraction Works
PDF files store pages as independent objects within the document structure. Each page contains its own content streams, fonts, images, and annotations. When you extract pages, the tool creates a new PDF document and copies only the selected page objects along with their dependencies (embedded fonts, images, and other resources).
This tool uses the pdf-lib library to perform the extraction entirely in your browser. The original PDF is loaded into memory, selected pages are copied to a new document, and shared resources are deduplicated to minimize output file size. The result is a valid, self-contained PDF that works in any reader without requiring the original file.
Because extraction happens client-side using JavaScript, your files never leave your device. There is no server upload, no cloud processing, and no data retention. The tool works offline after the initial page load, making it suitable for handling sensitive or confidential documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to any server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device. You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet before using the tool.
Can I extract pages from a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. You need to remove the password first using our Unlock PDF tool, then extract the pages you need from the unprotected file.
What is the maximum file size supported?
The tool supports PDF files up to 100 MB. Since processing happens in your browser, very large files may take longer depending on your device's memory and processing power.
Will the extracted PDF preserve links and bookmarks?
The extraction preserves page content, annotations, and form fields. Internal links that point to pages not included in the extraction may become non-functional. Bookmarks pointing to extracted pages are preserved.
What is the difference between extracting and splitting a PDF?
Extracting lets you pick specific non-consecutive pages (e.g., pages 1, 5, and 12). Splitting divides the entire document into sequential parts. Use our Split PDF tool if you want to divide a document into equal chunks.
Can I extract pages and then merge them with another PDF?
Yes. Extract the pages you need, download the result, then use Merge PDF to combine it with other documents. This workflow is great for assembling custom documents from multiple sources.
